5 Rhythms® is the original ecstatic dance practice – freeing and easy, it’s a workout and an energy bath. Created by Gabrielle Roth, this practice brings the wisdom of ancient spiritual dance practices into a 21st century context, infusing them with progressive rhythms and adapting them to the modern psyche.
Participants are guided into an exploration of five distinct but natural rhythmic patterns – Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, Stillness® – finding then expanding their own style and capacity for expression within each. The practice is grounding and energising, increasing fitness, fluidity and enhanced emotional intelligence.
Friday classes are weekly and open to all. They vary from week to week, including:
5Rhythms® Fundamentals – first Friday of every month
In these classes the teaching will include more detail about the basic form of the rhythms, their innate nature and character, plus their origin and evolution. This is particularly useful for beginners… and a great reminder for the rest of us!
Sweat Your Prayers® – last Friday of every month
A guided warm-up then a wave with few words and relatively little structure – simply moving through a wave using music as our guide.

Bernadette Ryder has been immersed in the 5 Rhythms dance practice for more than 20 years, and has been teaching since 1998. She also practices yoga, meditation and Kriya breathwork, which she integrates beautifully into her classes, workshops and training programmes. Bernadette is a Director and co-founder of DMAC (Dance Music Arts Collective) who established and run the ‘In-Alignment Dance Studios’ in Hamilton House. More about Bernadette.
