An event every week that begins at 6:00pm on Wednesday, repeating indefinitely
An ancient way of maintaining physical, mental and spiritual health, these classes are lighthearted and great fun, but leave you with a true sense of achievement.
Kirby is the resident drum teacher for DMAC UK based in InAlignment studios Hamilton House Stokes Croft, Bristol.
All are welcome to the beginners class. It begins with a brief description of technique for hand drumming followed by a sometimes wild warm up, where participants are invited to just have a go at the rhythms being offered with no concerns about ‘making mistakes’. A traditional West African rhythm is then taught with often two interlocking Djembe patterns for participants to develop their coordination and understanding of the beautiful and sophisticated beats that come from this continent. We sometimes learn ‘breaks’ in the music and may have a go at improvisation.
The intermediates class is for people who have already had experience of playing hand drums and have a knowledge of rhythm based music. We explore the intricacies of both West African and Afro-Cuban grooves, learning long sentences and complex pieces.
Anyone can come at any time, but obviously its better to join at the beginning of a course when possible.
Courses run alongside the school termly calendar so can be 5, 6 or 7 weeks.
When booking for the course,
